Tutorial: Total Recorder
Total Recorder is audio recording software designed by High Criteria, Inc.  After a simple, free download, Total Recorder allows you to record PC audio from almost any source (microphone, tape recorder, etc). It is far more powerful and flexible than the built-in Windows Sound Recorder on all pc's. One of its best features is recording audio as compressed MP3 files (as compared to WAV).

Our main purpose is to have you (the student) use a microphone attached to the microphone port on your computer to record your work (like Vocabulary, short sentences, etc.). You will save the audio recording as a file on your computer, then email it as an attachment to your instructor for them to listen (and respond) to.

The Total Recorder evaluation copy is a fully functional version of the program, with the exception that an audible noise will be inserted about every 60 seconds throughout the recording.

How to download Total Recorder Standard Edition 5.x

  1. Go to the following website: http://www.highcriteria.com/download/tr50se.exe
  2. The initial screen may ask you if you wish to Open or Save the file. I would recommend Saving the file in your MyDocuments folder, then installing from there. The file will be approximately 1.4MB in size, and the filename will probably be tr50se.exe.
    • After the download is complete, the screen will prompt you to Open or Close. Go ahead and Open (to install the software).
  3. Select the Setup button to proceed. And just keep hitting Next, then eventually the Finish button.
  4. This is the unregistered version, and is free! However, it will record for ONLY ONE MINUTE before inserting a little noise, then let you keep recording. We will just ignore the periodic noises.
  5. After the install, be sure to Reboot your computer before attempting to record! Otherwise, Total Recorder will not work.
